What you’re going to need to do is grab yourself some trousers and some chapstick, because it’s January O ten and the Burton Am Series is, as the glorious Willie Nelson once said, On The Road Again. SNOWBOARDER Magazine and Amp Energy Drink are once again bringing you this good time, traveling, contest circus. Our first stop just wrapped up at Mt Hood Meadows in the beautiful state of Oregon and it was a magical one. Although we had to navigate some of Hood’s notoriously shifty weather, with the help of the amazing Mt. Hood Meadows staff, we pulled off a radical contest. The riders threw down ridiculous maneuvers, no one got hurt, and we handed out a few qualifying spots for the Burton US Open as well as 750 dollars in cold hard check. That’s about all one can ask for in this day and age.
“Skylar Thornton was on point all day putting down back rodeos.”
42 male competitors took to the Slopestyle course and immediately started throwing down. Spins came from every direction. People got sideways, right side down, and generally all directions of awesome. Josh Dodson took the top qualifying spot with some clean, stomped out runs. Skylar Thornton was on point all day putting down back rodeos and Matt Guess was sending some creative snowboarding, opting to deal with speed issues in the bottom rail section by unstrapping and doing that shit one footed. Ryan Linnert took the Best Trick award, a new addition to our format this year, by driving a truck 720 degrees in a circle and making it look sick.
The ladies got just as serious as the dudes. Kumara Kelly took the top qualifying spot and didn’t look back until she was standing atop the podium. Katie Williams was right on her heels with sweet 5′s. But Kumara decided to seal the deal on her final run by throwing down a run switch that most ladies would be pumped to stomp regular.
All in all it was a magnificent afternoon and thanks to everyone for coming out. Again a special thanks to Chris, Kevin, Rev and all of the staff at Mt. Hood Meadows, we couldn’t have done it without you guys. Thanks to Amp Energy Drink and SNOWBOARDER Magazine. This was the first stop of 6 and we still have spots available at our upcoming events. So check out the Burton Am Series page and get signed up at the mountain nearest you. Its only 10 bones for a chance at a spot in the US Open and 750 dollar dollar bills. Next stop Bear Mountain CA. And I’m out.
