The start of last season was not really epic, SLC was nearly bone dry, and by the time New Years Eve came around, HUSTLE became the daily theme. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula had been getting hit with snow like it was its job, so Sean Black new it was high time to Mind The Video Man and set up a trip. Sean Black, Brandon Hammid, Ryan Paul, Nial Romanek, Sean Lucey, and myself all scrambled our way up to Houghton, MI, where Viktor Simco joined our ranks.

3 months of despair vanished when we considered how much snow we had to work with compared to the dismal prospects offered by Utah. Sean Lucey and I woke up at 4am the first morning to hit a spot with Hammid, which he easily destroyed, setting the tone for the rest of the trip. From there on out it was a blur of freezing weather, laughter, 2 maybe 3 spots a day, shitty hotels, shitty food, Nial getting so sick we sent him to the hospital, news crews and cop cars, and a seemingly endless amount of spots to hit.

Another thing that made the trip interesting was running into so many different crews almost daily. Word was Visconti had just left, who was there right after Brisse and E-Stone, we saw the Bald E-gal dudes, the Volcom crew, and no matter where we went, Shane Charlieboy, Cale Zima, Brandon Cocard and Bode Merril were not far away, and it was fun seeing them every night at the hotel and trying to figure out what spot they hit, and what tricks went down on.

Make sure you get yourself a copy of Think Thank’s “Mind the Video Man”, Volcom’s“IP2”, Absinthe’s “Resonance” and Bald E-Gal’s “E-Gal Eye” and keep your eyes on the mags, because last January in Michigan snow deprived riders were unleashed on one unsuspecting town after another, and to put it simply, Michigan got destroyed, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.
