Marquette, Michigan plays a pivotal role in the ever-growing Midwest snowboard scene. Contrary to popular belief, Marquette gets dumped on almost every winter, and the area is becoming recognized as a destination for film crews looking to bag some footage, as evidenced by the Forum team’s visit this past winter. So it makes sense that in the summer of 2000, Marquette’s very own Casualties Skate, Snow, & Surf shop opened its doors to the public. Conceived by brothers Andy and Matt Jones, Casualties’ main objective was to provide a strong backbone to the rapidly-growing shred scene, and has become the premier snowboard shop on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. With Northern Michigan University in town, Casualties caters to seasonal college shreds and year-round residents with a high-five and a smile, slingin’ gear at great prices and interacting with their customers with respect, honesty, and good vibes all-around.
“The U.P. is laid back, easy-going, and the people look after one another. That’s something that you just don’t find everywhere, and we like to share that with the rest of the world,” says Andy. Casualties just goes to show you that with big box chains popping up like boners at a porno convention, the mom-and-pop boardin’ shop is still the way to go if you want to support your local scene and intermingle with some genuine people who share your love of snowboarding. Casualties is legit, so if you’re in the area, swing in and purchase something, ’cause the Jones’ are jones-in’ to help you.
