January 24, 2014 – Aspen, CO – Today Monster Energy's Nate Holland continued his dominance by taking the gold in Snowboarder X at X Games Aspen 2014. He overcame a bevy of obstacles including the flu this week and a broken collarbone earlier this year to earn his 7th gold and 8th medal overall in Snowboarder X.
After a one-year break from the X Games competition line-up, this year Snowboarder X returned to the schedule. The event sees snowboarders racing down a technical course with fast turns and high-speed jumps—first racer to the bottom wins. Holland won the last time the event ran in 2012, and this year he picked up right where he left off.
In his semi-final match-up, Holland ran the race in the middle of the pack, making it up front to easily qualify in the 3rd position. When the gates dropped in the final, he once again found himself deep in the pack, but Holland relied on his extensive experience to battle to the front. He took inside tracks and lots of lines the other racers didn't. After a final filled with lots of passes and changes, Holland made it to the front of the pack near the end of the race and crossed the finish line first.
After the race, Holland said, "It's been a year of ups and downs, but today I blocked everything out, stayed focused, and relied on my experience. I'm fired up for X and this gold medal."
