Snowboard Video Premiere Season is only the beginning. It’s an exciting, yet dangerous time to be in Utah right now. Seems like only yesterday that the summer snowboarding was done, and a “normal summer” was about to begin. But as soon as the SLC summers cool down, people start thinking about where they’ll be riding, what to buy, tricks, etc, etc. The snow-bros and pro-hoes start popping up again each weekend at whatever snowboard-related event is happening, and before you know it, kids will be hiking up to guardsmen’s for the preseason fix. The hype is growing, and luckily there’s nights like this that feed the fire. Friday night catered to the World Premiere of Capita’s "Defenders Of Awesome", along with 32’s all-am video Ammo.
The scene at the U of U was no different this time. Kids lined up for autographs from local snowboard sensations such as Dan Brisse, Cale Zima, and Brandon Cocard who flew in for the world premiere. As the sun went down, everyone made their way inside to hope for a seat in the already packed theatre. Ammo started first with plenty of explosions, guns, slams, and hammers to get the night going. SLC native Brandon Hobush a.k.a “The Burning Bush” scored first part in his first attempt at a video part, and he started it off proper. Expect to see pretty much every rail trick you can do with proper style during his inaugural offer. The Brandon Larson/ Mike Rav/ Johnny Brady combo comes next with a serious montage of heaters. Everyone’s favorite Desiree Melancon impersonator, Spencer Schubert keeps it rolling with plenty of heavy rail maneuvers and handles some beef with a tree in his part. After Spencer, there’s a nice mix of rand-ams like Tyler Flanagan, Jared Jordan, and local ripper Parker Worthen. Alaskan wrestling champion Chris Brewster dropped next. Brewster is always an awesome person to watch snowboard, and his part is no different. Look out for a cameo from his roommate/32 pro Johnny Miller. Other “A” team crowd favorites Bradshaw, Stevens, and Grenier share the next part with some of their leftover hams from last season. Dylan Alito snipes the last part in Ammo, with a heavy blend of crazy rail tricks on crazy features, and a good amount of backcountry jumps. Alito could possibly be one of the most insane snowboarders to watch, and his part shows why. Gotta see it to believe it.
Then it was time for Defenders Of Awesome. Led by moviemaker extraordinaire Mark Dangler and Capita Boss Blue Montgomery, the Capita crew worked hard this year and it showed. The movie starts off right away with Scott Stevens (Atchaboi). Pre-intro parts are the new first parts, and in my opinion it’s a great way to start the flick. As usual, Scott’s part will entertain and blow your mind just like he’s done for years. Dan “Brisseburger” Brisse takes over after the intro, explains his perfect cheeseburger, and then proceeds to destroy the most death defying spots you can find. Jess Kimura (Danger Pony) upped the ante for women’s snowboarding yet again with her part this year. Cale Zima (Kenny Chimps) has one of the most entertaining parts of the year, with an unexpected song and plenty of tricks that would break most people’s legs. Brandon Cocard, aka The Birdman, came out with one of the best well rounded parts of the year so far, complete with today’s hot jib tricks mixed with some serious jump maneuvers. Tj Schneider (Texas Long Balls) and Andrew Burns (Burnzy Sprits) defend another awesome part together, and Mama Hades, aka Laura Hadar fills out the other half of the Capita lady’s division. Mike Ravelson jumped up the ladder this season and filmed enough hammers throughout New England to secure himself a nice debut part. If you didn’t know who Rav was before, you definitely will soon because Rav’s got it figured out. Dustin Craven (Crusty Dusty) brought the backcountry heat this year, from big pillow lines to some large backcountry kickers and quarterpipes. And then there’s Phil Jacques (French Vanilla). I don’t think there were any tricks that he didn’t do in his part. He destroyed every rail in his path last year from Quebec to Salt Lake City and hit a good grip of powder kickers to seal the deal.
After the movies, everyone scrambled downtown to Fice (Mama Hades’ clothing store) for the after party. Spelltalk played out back, and everyone drank beer and talked some more about snowboarding.
