Boreal Opening Day 2012-13

Words and Photos: Kyle Beckmann In October there is always something to look forward to in the Tahoe area, Boreal Opening Day. And this year, on October 26th, the guys over at Boreal didn’t disappoint. With around 3 feet of natural snow falling earlier in the week, it was poised to be a fun opening session. Lane, Brandon, and the rest of the terrain park staff definitely did it right, laying out about 12 features including a small jump, down tube, propane tank, a few boxes, and a super poppy pole jam. There wasn’t a shortage of shredders either. People came from as far as Bend, OR and SLC, UT to session Castle Peak lift and the fun little park. If you ended up not wanting to ride all day, Woodward Tahoe had its doors open, and a lot of people took advantage of some tramp and skate sessions. If you get a chance, go shred! Check rideboreal.com and woodwardtahoe.com for more details on what’s open, and what times.

Arbor FACE/OFF: Boreal

On April 15th, 2012 Arbor Snowboard's FACE/OFF event was held at Boreal Mountain Resort. With the DJ blasting music on the sideline, contestants registered for a chance to compete for the $1,000 prize purse. It was a clash of amateur shred individuals who wanted a shot at the cash winnings. Some of the riders included the defending champ from last year's FACE/OFF event, Erik Leon, along with Ben Ross, Kai Wiggens, Colton Morgan, Alex Hereford, Jeremy (Lemi) Landy, Jordan Welter and other standouts. All riders were on a mission to show their snowboarding skills to impress the judges in order to advance to the next rounds. The first round was an open jam format with sixteen semi-finalists who were advanced to play games of S.N.O.W. The contestants were knocked out one by one in semi-finals as the tricktical maneuver difficulties increased, and it narrowed down to four finalists. The battle for first place was between the last two competitors, Kai Wiggens and Colton Morgan. After multiple rebates trying a backside 270 to fakie, the trick was finally landed by Colton Morgan, earning him $600 and making him the winner of Arbor Snowboard's FACE/OFF event. Thanks to everyone coming out and making the event fun, and thanks to the event sponsors that made it possible: Arbor, Red Bull, Boreal Mountain Resort, Electric Visual, Flux Bindings, Sessions, Aerial7, Sand Box Helmets, Arnette and Elm Company. Men: 1st: Colton Morgan 2nd: Kai Wiggens 3rd: Jeremy (Lemi) Landy 4th: Erik Leon Women: 1st: Kate Barrett Judges included: Sean Black, Nick Visconti, Scotty Vine, Sammy Spiteri, Brandon Hammid and Eli Weiner. (Here is the order of tricks that went down in the final game of S.N.O.W.: Frontside lipslide, nollie back lip, switch frontside boardslide, switch backside boardslide, frontside 270, hardway backside 270, switch backside 270, switch frontside nosepress, and the winning trick, backside 270 to fakie.) The event is dedicated to the memory of legendary terrain park builder, Miah Peably who worked with Snow Summit, Bear Mountain, Mountain High, Northstar and Snow Park Technologies building parks for world class events including the Dew Tour, Winter X Games and countless high profile film and photos shoots.
