WCI & Eddie Wall Ride: Mammoth 2012

Words & Photos: Kyle McCoy May fifth Cinco De Drinko, Mammoth mountain, and Monster energy hosted the West Coast Invitational and the Eddie Wall Ride. The weather was great, shredding slush and drinking cerveza's all day with two great bands and events in the evening. Eddie kicked off his event first with an array of jibs and one giant wall ride, which was the only feature that was judged. After flips, hand plants and whatever you could imagine went down on the wall, Jaeger Bailey walked away with first, Sam Taxwood took second and Chris Grenier held down third. Scott Blum was awarded best trick for his massive hand plants on top of the wall. Winners took home goggles from Sabre, headphones from Dre Beats, top three got a Vestal watch and an ipad. After the wall ride The Ragged Jubilee took the stage and jammed out till the WCI jump was lit up. The format for the WCI was shook-en up this year, with a big air format and teams of a rider and a skier to hit the jump and take the podium together. Before everyone headed into the Canyon lodge for the musical stylings of Rye Rye, Chas Guldemond and Parker White were given two giant shoes stuffed full of cash. Everyone put their ipads, Dre Beats headphones and stacks of cash in a safe spot and headed for the Hyde lounge for the after party. Till next year, check your mail for an invitation.

Flow Tailgate Alaska 2012: Part 2 Recap

The first blue day after two days of gray, Mark Sullivan walks into the warming tent and the first thing out of his mouth was, “well you pussies gunna go ride or what?” Those words set the tone for the rest of the Flow Tailgate Alaska. Tailgaters were treated to an unbelievable ten out of twelve days of blue skies and sunshine this year. The heli guides flew non-stop, snow machines broke and were fixed to break again and the Flow World Freeride Championships event went off with as good of conditions as you could ask for. The qualifying round was held in the classic area of Bro Bowl and the finals location at the back shoulder Python was not revealed till the morning of the event. The crews at Alaska Snowboard Guides were up early to fly the riders and media to the event and then it was a go. Eight men and two women took one run each. The video was logged and edited for the riders to judge the next night down in Valdez, at the Thirty-Two Degrees Bar inside the Mountain Sky lodge. After the ballots were cast Brandon Reid, an ASG employee, walked away with a sword and ten-thousand in cash and Emily Weir from South Lake Tahoe took home a sword and paid day of heli-time. With the awards done the party eventually made it down the street to the Boardroom where the beer and whiskey flowed and the dance pole was occupied all night. The next night with a deserted camp, any and all wood was added to the fire, Roman candle fights and one last glimpse of green lights lit up the sky. Only half way through the trip people were planning for next year, so start saving a heli budget and figure out a way to get your sled up to Flow Tailgate Alaska cause Thompson’s Pass Kicks Ass!
