Last Call: Loon 2012

Words: Tyler Davis Photos: T. Bird Nothing beats a sunny New England spring day, especially when it coincides with one of the best contests in snowboarding. Eastern Boarder has been putting on Last Call for the past 11 years, and this edition might have been the heaviest yet. With an impressive invited riders list, innovative set up and perfectly sunny day, the 12th annual Last Call was on. Brian Norton, Jay Scambio and the rest of the Loon Mountain Park crew set up some of the best features I have seen in a long time. The first section was filled with an array of unique tiered rail features, including a flat-down-flat tube and flat-gap-down box. Nic Doucette was an early standout, gapping from the take off of the middle section to the Jersey barrier on the far right side. Other standout riding came from the likes of Ian Keay, Eugene Stancato, Brandon Rego and Rob Hallowell, each showing their own unique approach on the rails. The second session went down on the quarterpipe/wall ride/close out rail combo feature. With tons of options and riders dropping all over the place, it was the scene of some heavy tricks and close calls. Will Mayo and Danny Garrity both found the sweet spot with numerous overhead backside airs, but the trick of the session belonged to Terrick B, with his massive 270 transfer into the wall ride. The day ended with one of the biggest right side hips New Hampshire has ever seen. Nick Doucette and Zach Normandin where blasting overhead airs with ease and style. Without a doubt, Hunter Wood had the trick of the day, somehow tapping to fakie the height pole on the deck. It was unreal. Amy Gan and Mary Rand rode well all day, but couldn’t stop Joanna Dzierzawski. Coming all the way from Lake Tahoe, she killed it all day and definitely deserved first place. On the men’s side it was a tight battle between the top three. In the end Hunter Wood took third, Ian Keay second and it was Nick Doucette taking home the win. Nick was on point all day, gapping the rail section, handplanting the barrels on the quarter pipe and claiming the biggest air on the hip. A big thank you goes out to Eastern Boarder, K2, Oakley, Red Bull, and Thirtytwo for all of their support, along with the LMP crew for their hard work. Results: Men: 1. Nick Doucette (hip high air and rail best trick) 2. Ian Keay 3. Hunter Wood Hip best trick- Travis Nuenhaus Wallride best trick- Terrick B Women: 1. Joanna Dzierzawski 2. Mary Rand 3. Amy Gan
