You can fantasize about donning your Day-Glo, popping open a Jolt Cola, launching a cross rocket off a kicker and blasting Bananarama from your boombox all you want, but snowboarding in the 80’s wasn’t as radical as modern day retro-revivalists will have you believe. Take the gear, for instance. Every time you left the ground there was a good chance your bindings would leave your board. Snowboard boots weren’t even a thing until nearly the 90s, so riders were stuck with Sorels and Doc Martens. Lastly, most ski areas didn’t even allow snowboarding until George Bush Sr. was in the White House. This means that any rider who really wants to immerse themselves in the “80’s” snowboarding experience should grab some of the gear highlighted here and head up to Alta or Mad River Glen and see firsthand what it was and still is like to not be allowed on the lifts. Although ironically, Alta and Mad River Glen did allow snowboarding back in the 80s, so here is to hoping they also take part in this 80s retro revival trend. —Pat Bridges
