After wrapping up an amazing week at Mt. Baker Ski Area for the 30th Anniversary of the Legendary Baker Banked conditions were lining up for the Cascades to be amazing. Having the crew in town for the race was perfect to keep a couple of the boys around for a week of shooting with Yoshida for the 686 GLCR line. I lined up a photo-shoot with 686 team riders Matt Belzile and Matt Wainhouse, with Mike Yoshida behind the camera and video with Liam Gallagher, as well as myself. Dave Tomosson from MoPro’s rolled with the crew as well. Snowmobiles were the means of travel to explore a vast zone that had any type of terrain a snowboarder could ask for.
686 rented a 29 foot RV, grabbed some supplies, and headed out of town to get nestled up in the North Cascades at the base of the snowmobile park, knowing that at this zone I could get to the elevations we would need to find good snow conditions. If the high pressure is brewing, it’s a great place to ride, but when its cloudy (which it usually is), this zone does not work at all. We camped out for a week, exploring, hiking, snowmobiling, split-boarding and locating some amazing terrain. I love sharing places I have found with new riders who are grateful for the opportunity to see a new zone and utilize the skills they have honed at their own locales. The days were long with powder runs, big jumps and step downs, using the undulating natural features to form some amazing hits to snowboard on.
We would ride usually until the sun was setting then head down to the RV to cook food, hang by the bonfire, crush a couple PBR’s and rest our bones for the upcoming day. Sometimes the after-shooting activities are the best: fires, evenings telling stories, cooking together. Sometimes on these trips everything seems difficult to make happen, but this one seemed to progress naturally. I love the Cascades and knowing that Matt Belzile destroys the Whistler, B.C. zone, I knew I would have to show him some amazing terrain to capture his attention.
Special thanks to Dave from MoPro’s for being our GLCR advocate and sled mission leader, Mike Yoshida for the amazing images, and Liam Gallagher for documenting all the video. Matt Wainhouse killed it all week, dropping some huge features and landing some solid freestyle maneuvers off natural terrain. Matt Belzile bagged some insane shots and shipped back up to Whistler to meet back up with The Man Boys. Life was good at the campground and alone deep in the mountains. Thank you 686 and Mother Nature for cooperating with us for the week. Make sure to check out the 686 GLCR line this next season.
