Mountain Goat: Barrett Christy
With nearly a dozen medals to her credit, Barrett Christy is the second most decorated female athlete in X Games history. This accomplishment is impressive enough on its own, but once you take into account that Barrett was 26 when she competed at X for her first time, her 11 podium appearances becomes Herculean in nature. It is worth noting that 26 is the current age of Jamie Anderson who, this past January, finally passed Christy in X Games medal count by earning her 12th podium. Of course, Jamie was 13 when she first competed in Aspen. Barely out of her teens when she migrated from the rolling hills of Pennsylvania to the mountains of Colorado, Barrett barged onto the scene with a fearlessness that betrayed her humble hippie ways.
Gnu and Wave Rave quickly noticed her potential and before long she was nabbing feature interviews and making the marquee of movies like SNOWBOARDER's Dynasty and The Mervin Mockumentary. A win at the US Open in '97 began Barrett's ascension to the inaugural US Olympic Halfpipe Team. Although Barrett didn't place in the Nagano Games and reap the traditional Wheaties box reward, consolation came in the form of a similar Apple Jacks adornment. And results were still to come for Barrett beyond the pipe, including a Mt. Baker Banked Slalom title in 2011. Christy's namesake maneuver, the half Cab barrel roll, more commonly referred to as the "Barrett Roll," carried her to countless big air and slopestyle victories, including her aforementioned X Games accolades. These accomplishments and more have earned Barrett a "Director of Awesome" position at Gnu, 20-plus pro model boards, an Air Barrett Christy Nike sneaker, and the appreciation of at least three generations of fans.
