Rider Profile: Blake Paul

It was either Barrett Christy or Jeff Moran who put Blake Paul on my radar. As a kid on the come-up from Jackson I always saw Blake as an heir to the realm of Travis Rice. Perhaps this is where the “Backcountry Prince” moniker came from. In early July of 2011 Blake visited our offices with Aaron Robinson while the two were en route to Chile. Within a week, Blake’s friend and mentor would pass away in a tragic accident. Not long after, Blake reached out to me hoping to add to Aaron’s legacy by putting his experiences into words in SNOWBOARDER. The resulting feature was a personal account of the ultimate sacrifice that some have made while choosing to pursue this passion we call snowboarding. I have put hundreds of thousands of words down on the page in my career as a writer, yet I don’t know if I could ever muster the poise and prose to do so as courageously, emotionally or eloquently as Blake did in that piece, and I hope with all my will that I never have to. – Pat Bridges
