Earning a Spot on the U.S. Women’s Snowboard Team Headed to Sochi, Rising Star Kaitlyn Farrington is One to Watch

Sun Valley, Idaho Local Didn't Start Competing in Snowboarding Until Age 17

Sun Valley, ID – Feb. 3, 2014 – A rising star in U.S. women's snowboarding and one of the newest members to the U.S. women's snowboard halfpipe Olympic team, 25-year-old Sun Valley, Idaho local Kaitlyn Farrington is an athlete to watch in Sochi. Farrington grew up and learned to snowboard in Sun Valley, and members of the community in the historic mountain town are celebrating as she continues the Olympic heritage the resort has relished in since the late 1930's.

"I'm proud to join the ranks of the legendary athletes who have participated in both the winter and summer Olympic Games before me, and who also call Sun Valley home," said Farrington. "This is something I've been working toward for a long time, and heading to Sochi and competing on the world's stage is going to be 100 percent fun!"

After being nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team in Mammoth, CA on January 19, Farrington went on to compete at X Games Aspen in Colorado, finishing the contest with a bronze medal in women's snowboard halfpipe.

"Kaitlyn was part of the first wave of kids that benefited from Sun Valley investing in a halfpipe program. When she started high school and we saw her competing and holding her own, she graduated to bigger events and really got on the radar," said Andy Gilbert, Head Development Coach, Sun Valley Snowboard Team. "All of the coaches that have been involved with Kaitlyn's training from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation over the years are really proud of her accomplishment. It's great to see the excitement and support our entire community has for her and her family as she heads to Sochi."

In addition to her 2014 X Games podium finish, Farrington's most recent contest results include placing fourth in the 2013 World Championships, and third and fifth place finishes in three World Cup contests in 2013. She was the 2012 U.S. Grand Prix overall champion and 2012 Dew Tour gold medalist for women's snowboard halfpipe. Farrington's first time on top of the podium was at the 2008 Junior World Championships where she took home silver.
