Nitro has been involved in Burton’s Step On program for a couple years now, but the Switzerland-based company is taking their collaboration with Burton a step further.

Nitro will now make its own Step On bindings that are compatible with Burton’s boards and boots, the company announced Tuesday evening (December 17, 2024).

“It is our goal to provide the best possible experience to snowboarders worldwide”, Nitro’s Founder and President Tommy Delago said in a press release. “Many of us have experienced the confusion in the market created 25 years ago by a multitude of non-compatible systems. We therefore decided against developing our own proprietary system and instead, have identified Step On® as the leading system and joined forces with Burton. By adding Nitro’s own fit and functionality to Step On, we will offer greater variety with full compatibility to retailers and riders alike.”

The bindings will be available to purchase at local shops in the Fall of 2025. The news comes just weeks after Union Binding Co. announced that it would partner with Burton to make Step On bindings. Previously, only Burton made Step On bindings, while DC and Nitro both made compatible boots for the system.

“We’ve always valued our strong partnership with the Nitro team, as we both share a long-held commitment to progressing snowboarding and advancing snowboard technology,” Chris Fidler, Vice President of Hardgoods at Burton, said in a press release. “From the beginning, Nitro has been committed to progressing Step On®, and we’re thrilled to see them further expand their Step On offering. As the first brand to offer a complete boot and binding package with Step On compatibility, Nitro is continuing to expand the variety of Step On options across the industry.“

Union has teamed up with Burton to make a Step On binding.

The bindings will feature Nitro’s signature high-back design with its integrated forward-lean adjustment and a Step On-specific flex pattern.

Step On’s have been instrumental in lowering the barrier for entry to snowboarding, both by providing options for riders who might need adaptive equipment, and by making it easier to strap in. It’s also improved the longevity of many riders, and kept them from switching to skiing as they get older.

The first Step On compatible boots from Nitro were released in 2022. Currently, The Skylab, Darkseid, Profile, Cave, and Dynasty are all available in Step On compatible versions.

It’s an interesting time to be a company that makes bindings right now. Not only have Nitro and Union crossed over into the world of Step Ons, but recently announced was the FASE system. Jones, ThirtyTwo, Bataleon, and Rome have all signed on to incorporate that fast entry technology in their bindings for the next season.
