It’s rare to ride spring conditions on the East Coast during the first weekend of February. Soft snow and bright sunshine are not usually associated with deep winter on that side of the country. This fact made it all the more amazing that on the weekend of February 2-3, 2019, it was nearly 50 degrees and sunny at Beech Mountain in North Carolina. Mother Nature was smiling for the first-ever stop of Beyond the Boundaries at Beech, setting the stage for perfect park laps and learning new tricks.
North Carolina has a storied heritage in snowboarding, from pro riders to industry veterans, this Southern state is a low key breeding ground for talent and harbors an immense passion for standing sideways. RECESS Skate and Snow, located in Boone and run by JP and Ashley Pardy, is a longtime catalyst of the local scene. They jumped in immediately to partner with BTBounds on the weekend camp and hosted a pre-camp welcome party on Friday night at the shop.
The park crew, led by Chase Krause and Alex Ricketts, built a super creative set up for the BTBounds crew. Approachable rails, boxes, and tubes were set up in a progression, allowing BTBounds participants to keep stepping up as they became more comfortable and increased their jibbing confidence. In the middle of the private park was a gap-to-butter pad and skate-style bowl, topped with a perfect doghouse stall. The inventive feature was a favorite of the ladies throughout the weekend: numerous butters and blunt stalls were learned. Plus, it was a bonus that the Beech park is serviced by its own rope tow, facilitating lap after lap of trick learning.
BTBounds crew, Christine Savage, Savannah Golden, Ashley Giangregorio, and Mary Walsh were on site to hang out, shred, and facilitate learning and confidence-building. It was the first time snowboarding in NC for all of the coaching crew and everyone was equally blown away by the community. “The snowboarders in North Carolina have so much passion for riding,” said Ashley. “It’s clear that the women here love to snowboard and are hungry for more opportunity to do so together. I am so stoked to get to experience this community and become a small part of it through this weekend. And I can’t wait to come back next year!”
The weekend was loaded with first-time tricks and plenty of progression and the spring-like atmosphere was filled with smiles and high fives. Contributing to the vibe was Kristen and Thalia from Girls Go Shred, a new community of and for North Carolina’s ladies to come together and go ride. When the weekend came to a close, the entire crew was already looking forward to next winter.
Huge thanks to Talia, Chase, Alex, JP, Ashley, Kristen, Thalia, Ashley G., and the entire crew at Beech for the warm welcome and for the amazing weekend! See you next year!
